Megaproject in Hamburg: Nagel-Group doubles logistics capacities and modernises extensively
Hamburg, 23.08.2023. The Nagel-Group is launching an extensive expansion and modernisation project at its Hamburg site. Germany’s largest food logistics company will completely restructure the site in the Allermöhe industrial estate. In addition to the construction of a new transshipment warehouse, the storage capacities will also be modernised and expanded. The Nagel-Group is investing more than 60 million euros in this major project.
At Hans-Duncker-Straße in Hamburg’s Bergedorf district, the Nagel-Group currently operates on a 33,000-square-metre site, the size of which is now expanding to more than 70,000 square metres. Logistics capacities will also double, with approximately 18,000 pallet storage spaces available in the future.
“The Hamburg location has always been something special for our company. We established our first branch outside our headquarters here in 1959. We have been based in Hamburg-Allermöhe since the eighties and have expanded again and again. Now we are giving the go-ahead for the construction of an ultra-modern logistics complex,” said Marion Nagel, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors, at the laying of the foundation stone, which marked the official start of construction.
Nuts, spices or fish arrive at Nagel-Group in Hamburg from China, India, Vietnam or Colombia, and the logistics company ships cheese and chocolate from the Hanseatic city to the Middle East, Australia or the USA for its customers. “We use the seaport for worldwide imports and exports. Hamburg is already one of our three largest outbound locations,” said Marion Nagel.
The comprehensive modernisation and expansion is part of the largest investment programme in the company’s history. “We will invest up to 1 billion euros by 2032. In our network and in our digital infrastructure,” said Carsten Taucke, CEO of the Nagel-Group. Hamburg is among the most extensive projects to be implemented. “In the process, we have also clearly committed ourselves to the topic of sustainability: We are investing in state-of-the-art refrigeration systems, will set up photovoltaic systems and are developing concepts for more sustainable delivery. To this end, an exciting project is already underway here in Hamburg with our corporate venture Leafr,” Carsten Taucke explained.
The company Bremer Bau is developing the logistics property as general contractor. Completion is planned for the beginning of 2026. “We will completely restructure this site at the open heart, with ongoing operations. This will be a great challenge for all project participants,” said André Pleines, Executive Director Real Estate at the Nagel-Group. New warehouses and transshipment halls for fresh produce logistics will be built in several construction phases, along with a multi-storey car park for employees and larger parking and manoeuvring areas for semi-trailers. “This is a mega-project that can only begin here today thanks to the support of the city of Hamburg, our construction partners and the entire Nagel site,” says Pleines.
