Construction update: Nagel-Group opens new cross-docking warehouse in Hamburg

Nagel-Group is working intensively on the comprehensive modernisation of its Hamburg site. Another significant milestone has now been reached: the company opened its new cross-docking warehouse in Hamburg-Allermöhe on 6 April. Jens Kleiner – COO of Nagel-Group, André Pleines – Executive Director Real Estate and Achim Sinn – Regional Manager North-East, together with the employees on site, celebrated this important step.

Investment in the future

“The modernisation of our site in Hamburg is a decisive step towards meeting the increasing demands of our customers and reducing our carbon footprint at the same time,” emphasises Jens Kleiner – COO of Nagel-Group.

Nagel-Group is investing a total of more than 60 million euros in the site modernisation. The site is to grow to more than 70,000 square metres, doubling the storage and handling capacities. In future, around 4,000 pallets of fresh, ambient and ultra-fresh goods will be moved here every day over an area of 10,000 square metres. The logistics centre is complemented by modern office and social areas for around 100 commercial employees.

“We are delighted with the construction progress to date. The first two construction phases were completed on schedule and the third, which will begin in May 2025, will see the further expansion of the warehouse. In future, around 30,000 pallet spaces will be available here,” emphasises Achim Sinn – Regional Manager North-East.

Sustainability in the spotlight: Future-proof logistics for the food sector

The commissioning of the new cross-docking warehouse is part of a comprehensive expansion and modernisation project that is reshaping the site. Nagel-Group consistently favours sustainable technologies and energy-efficient systems:

  • A state-of-the-art NH3 refrigeration system provides an environmentally friendly cooling solution.
  • An 11,400 m² photovoltaic system with an output of 2,500 kWp contributes to the climate-friendly energy supply.
  • A planned battery storage system will help to reduce peak loads in the future.
  • The charging infrastructure has already been created for e-trucks and e-cars.

“Our aim was to create a logistics infrastructure that not only meets today’s requirements, but also those of the future. The combination of state-of-the-art technology and sustainable solutions makes our Hamburg site a beacon project,” says André Pleines.

Outlook: Final spurt to 2026

With two of the three construction phases completed, a significant part of the project has already been realised. Nagel-Group will further expand and modernise the Hamburg-Allermöhe site by the end of 2026 to ensure maximum efficiency and sustainability in food logistics. This includes integrating further innovative technologies, optimising logistical processes and consistently expanding sustainable energy sources.
